Status of the HITRAP DTL decelerator at GSI

The heavy ion trap (HITRAP) linac will decelerate highly charged ions up to U, provided by the GSI accelerator facility at 4 MeV/u down to 6 keV/u. The highly charged ions will subsequently be injected into a Penning trap for beam cooling. Therefore the HITRAP facility will provide unique pulsed beams of up to about 10 highly charged ions at very low energies for atomic physics experiments. The HITRAP decelerator LINAC consists of a double drift buncher (DDB) for phase focusing, an interdigital H-type (IH) structure and a 4-rod RFQ. The Drift Tube Linac (DTL) part of the decelerator section is tenor of this report. The deceleration stage from the ESR extraction energy of 4 MeV/u to 6 keV/u is done by an rflinear accelerator [1]. Fig.1 gives an overview drawing of the HITRAP decelerator LINAC.
